Exam Questions
1) Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. Were the choices you made regarding material, size, technique, etc beneficial to enhancing this project. Please explain.
I think my most successful project was the clay food. For the project we had to choose a food and replicate it in a realistic clay sculpture. We had to sketch out two of the clay food ideas and then one big compositional sketch of our final idea. We then started carving and shaping our sculpture into the food. I think the fact that I included not one but two popsicles was beneficial to the proportion and overall look of the project. I also included colors that would mix well together, which would overall make the sculpture more pleasing to the eye. I made sure to add lots of value so that the popsicle would look even more 3D and realistic. Even though one of the popsicles did break off, i think i did a good job of covering it up. I added the actual popsicle sticks to make them look very real, and I think overall the end product was exactly what I pictured and I'm very happy with how it turned out.
2) Look at your body of work over the semester and choose 2 pieces that show your growth as an artist. Discuss each piece and how you grew in the following areas: application of materials, techniques and skills, artistic vision, use of the principles and elements, creativity, intuition and subject matter.
Two pieces that I believe show my growth as an artist are the perspective drawing and the artist inspired painting. In the perspective drawing I used very limited value and texture. I also didn't have very dark shading, but overall I am pretty proud of the drawing itself. There were definitely things I could've improved on, a lot of those things i made up for in my painting. In my painting I used a lot more texture and lots of value. My sketching technique definitely improved from the perspective drawing. When sketching the painting on the canvas, I found it very simple to include proper dimensions and perspective points. My creativity definitely showed more in my painting, even though they're two very different projects, it's easy to tell that i lacked creativity in the perspective drawing. I think the two projects represent not only my growth as a more creative artist, but my understanding of techniques and skills.
3) Choose 2 mini lessons that you felt were the most beneficial in your learning for that particular project. Include photos of these and explain thoroughly. Do you feel you needed more instruction for success? Explain or did you feel that the instruction given was enough to ensure success? Explain. (if you do not have a photo for this just answer the question without one)
I think the two mini lessons that helped me the most were the overlapping drawing (Perspective) and the colored pencil apple sketches (Peacock Feather Drawing). They both helped me a lot when doing the actual projecs. I used many of the learned pencil techniques in my actual project. The different stroking techniques of the color pencil especially, helped a lot in my peacock feather drawing. It also helped me to achieve the best color pay off in my peacock feather, and make it very vibrant. The overlapping drawing helped my understanding of value and shading. I learned how important it was to add depth and a light source to make a drawing look realistic. I definitely think that i had enough instruction for success, my piece(s) turned out exactly how i wanted them to.
